Pennwriters Presents... Deanna Adams, Author, Essayist & Writing Instructor, 6/22/2009 PDF Print E-mail

Our Guest Star will be Deanna Adams, author, essayist, and writing instructor. She is an award-winning writer whose articles and essays have been published in a variety of newspapers and magazines. She recently placed second in the 2009 Ohio Excellence in Journalism Award in the Single Essay category. Deanna is an instructor at Lakeland Community College, and director of the Western Reserve Writers Conference, and the Women Writers’ Winter Retreat.

Her first book, ROCK ‘N’ ROLL AND THE CLEVELAND CONNECTION published by Kent State University Press in 2002. It was named a finalist for the 2003 Ohioana Award for nonfiction, and for excellence in research for the 2003 ARSC Awards (Association for Recorded Sound Collections).

Deanna’s new book, CONFESSIONS OF A NOT-SO-GOOD CATHOLIC GIRL is a collection of creative nonfiction stories. Here she reflects on topics of which most baby boomers can relate—Catholic or otherwise. The title comes from one of the vignettes in this collection of stories about growing up - and growing out. Although being Catholic is the thread that runs throughout the book, these coming-of-age stories are about family, relationships, and the legacies that are passed down from one generation to the next. And how faith can sometimes save us from ourselves.

Baby boomers will best relate to these stories. Those who cut their teeth on the Mickey Mouse Club. Whose first love was a Beatle, or a Supreme, or a Temptation. Who battled blemishes, while others braved the Vietnam War. Then finding themselves part of the dreaded “Establishment,” while raising children and watching parents grow old. Several of these stories were previously published in various forms in local and regional newspapers and magazines. Some are humorous, others poignant, but all will ultimately leave the reader reflecting on his or her own life memories—while demonstrating that boomers can indeed grow old with a sense of grace, wisdom, and humor.

Deanna Adams will be reading an excerpt from her book and signing copies at a date and location to be announced.

Her web site is http://www.deannaadams.com , where you can get more details on the below topics she will discuss:
